What English Courses can you study in Australia?

ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) applies to international students studying in Australia on Student Visas. ‘Intensive’ refers to full time study, meaning a minimum of 20 hours per week of face-to-face classes.

But… Which course to choose?

This depends on your current level of English and your aims and objectives – whether that is improving your English for study or everyday purposes, for travelling, for teaching purposes, for industry specific language skills or to prepare for a variety of language exams.

General English

This course is designed to improve your everyday English for work, study and travel purposes. At the beginning of your course, you will sit a test to identify your current level of English.

Levels of General English Courses

  • Beginner: I do not speak any English.
  • Elementary: I can understand and say a few things in English.
  • Pre-Intermediate: I can use simple sentences and understand situations I am familiar with but with difficulty.
  • Intermediate: I can speak and understand English relatively well and I can use basic tenses but more complex grammar and vocabulary are still difficult to me.
  • Upper - Intermediate: I am able to communicate without much difficulty but I still make occasional mistakes and misunderstand sometimes.
  • Advanced: I speak and understand fluently but need improvement with unfamiliar situations and vocabulary.

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Preparation​

PTE is an English test that is trusted around the world by colleges, universities and governments. In Australia, the PTE can also be used for immigration purposes.

How is the test?

The test consists of three main parts: speaking, writing, listening and reading. You have 3 hours to complete the test, consisting of twenty different question formats, from multiple choice through to interpreting information and writing.

How long does it take to give me the results?

The Results are often given within just 48 hours, and the computer-based scoring means that your results will be marked consistently and objectively.

Cambridge English

Is a Cambridge English course for me?

These courses are for students who already have a good foundation of General English.

They are designed to prepare you for different types of Cambridge exams by practicing sample exam questions and developing strategies to achieve the best result.

By studying a preparation course and completing a Cambridge exam, you not only improve your written, spoken, listening and reading skills but also gain a formal English qualification that is internationally recognised by employers and universities.

Preliminary English Test (PET)

This qualification shows that you have mastered the basics of English for everyday use such as reading simple textbooks and articles, writing texts on general subjects and showing awareness of mood and opinions in written and spoken English.

First Certificate in English (FCE)

This course is designed for students who are able to use English at an Upper-Intermediate level.

The main focus of this qualification is the correct use of English.

By studying real-life situations, you will be able to communicate more effectively.

You will learn complex grammar structures and phrasal verbs, as well as how to speak more confidently and write more advanced texts.

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

This is an exam preparation course for students who already use English at an Advanced level.

This course will focus on strengthening your skills for academic and professional purposes.

This certificate is also suitable for those who wish to teach English as a second language.

You will learn advanced grammatical structures, how to write advanced extended texts in various contexts, and express yourself fluently when communicating with native speakers.

Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)

The most advanced preparation course of the Cambridge qualifications.

CPE is for those who use English at an Advanced level, and it is a proof of English proficiency for functioning at an upper-management level in the professional world.

It can also be used for studying at a Post-Graduate Level.

This qualification is recognised by leading international companies and businesses all across the globe and by multiple educational institutions.

Requirements to study a Cambridge English Course

  • Copy of passport
  • Information of previous studies in your home country or country of residence
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Provide proof of a minimum level of General English of Intermediate or Upper Intermediate preferably

Whichever course you decide to study, will depend on your current level of English and your objectives, therefore it is not essential to complete all the courses below.

IELTS Preparation

What is a ELTS Preparation Course?

This course is designed to prepare you for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, which is an international standardised test of English proficiency. IELTS is accepted by most academic institutions where English is the primary language, and is also used for immigration purposes in Australia.

Instead of having to pass a minimum score to gain a certificate, everyone who undertakes this exam will receive a Test Report Form with a score from 1 – being the lowest proficiency – to 9 – being the most advanced proficiency.

There are two versions of IELTS.

IELTS Academic

For enrolling at universities and other higher education providers, as well as for professional recognition in certain fields such as IT, business or medicine.

IELTS General Training

For non-academic training purposes and for gaining work experience. This version of IELTS is also used for immigration purposes in Australia.

How much does it cost to study English in Australia?

Student visa price

Get a student visa to study in Australia costs 620 AUD.

If you also want to include your partner, it has an additional cost of 460 AUD more, that is, 1080 AUD in total.

If you want to include your children, it has an additional cost of 150 AUD for each one of them.

Price of the course you choose

This depends a bit on what you want to study, but we will give you an approximate cost for the different educational options you have.

English courses range from AUD 210 to AUD 300 per week, with the total cost depending on the total duration of the course, the type of course and its timetable.

OSHC Health Insurance Price

Health insurance to come to study in Australia is mandatory, and it does not have a very high cost.

You have policies that cost around 43 AUD per month or 516 AUD for one year visas.

How much do you have to bring to start?

What visa do you need to study English in Australia?

You can come to study English in Australia with 3 different types of visas, depending on your needs.

Student visa Subclass 500

It is the best option to come to study in English in Australia since you will be able to work part-time while you study and you will not have limitations when studying any course.

Work & Holiday Visa

This visa allows you to study in Australia for up to a maximum of 4 months (16 weeks). You can also work while you study.

Tourist Visa

With the tourist visa you can study an English course that lasts a maximum of 3 months, which is the total stay that this visa allows you. After that time you will have to leave the country. You will not be able to work while you study.
