What are the requirements to study in Canada?

If you come to study a language course lasting less than 6 months, you can do so with a tourist visa, but you wonā€™t be able to work while studying.

If you come to study a Vocational Training course lasting more than 6 months, the requirements are as follows:

  • A valid passport for the duration of your stay.
  • Enrollment in a course.
  • Application for the Canadian student visa.
  • Certificate of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, FCE, CAE).
  • Purchase medical insurance before traveling to Canada.
  • Submission of a motivational letter.
  • Proof of financial means for the duration of your stay in the country (approximately 10,000 CAD per year).
  • Police clearance certificate.

What can you study in Canada?

How much does it cost to study in Canada?

The price of the student visa

For language courses with a duration of less than 6 months, you can apply for the visitor visa, which costs about 100 CAD.

If you live in Spain, Chile, or Mexico, you can apply for the ETA (electronic authorization) for a cost of 7 CAD.

If you come to study a Vocational Training course, you can opt for the Working Holiday Visa, which has a duration of one year and costs around 250 CAD.

The price of the course you choose

The price of courses in Canada varies greatly depending on the type of course you want to take and the quality of the educational institution.

For example, an intensive English course can cost around 1,200 USD, while a Vocational Training course may have an average cost of 7,500 USD.

The price of medical insurance

Medical insurance for coming to study in Canada is mandatory, and it is not very expensive.

The price of the policy will depend on the coverage it offers and your personal circumstances, but to give you an idea, it will cost you approximately around 50 CAD per month.

Financial solvency

In order to study in Canada, you must demonstrate a minimum level of financial solvency. That means proving that you have enough money to cover your expenses during your stay and the return plane ticket.

On average, you will have to demonstrate that you have about 1,000 CAD for each month of your stay in the country.

How much do you need to bring to get started?

If you come with a visitor visa or ETA to study a language course, you will need to bring the money to cover your entire stay as you cannot work with this type of visa.

If you come to study a Vocational Training course with a visa that allows you to work, having about 1,500 to 2,000 CAD should be enough to survive until you find your first job.

Visas for studying in Canada

If your plan is to study and work in Canada, you need to be aware that this is only possible if you enroll in a Vocational Training program or a university course, for which you will need the Working Holiday Visa.

If you come to study English or French, a tourist visa (visitor visa) or ETA will be sufficient.

Woring Holiday Visa

With the Working Holiday Visa, you can stay in Canada for up to one year, with an additional 90 days to renew your visa. It costs 250 CAD.

Visitor Visa

Or a tourist visa. It allows you to stay in the country for up to 6 months, suitable for studying a language course. It costs around 100 CAD.

ETA

It is an electronic authorization to travel to Canada. It has the same characteristics as the visitor visa but is processed electronically and costs 7 CAD. You can obtain it if you live in Spain, Mexico, or Chile.
